Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has ignited a fresh wave of political debate after asserting that the governance record of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) played a key role in reviving the political fortunes of President John Dramani Mahama.

Kpebu described Mahama’s resurgence as a political “resurrection,” arguing that public dissatisfaction during the NPP’s time in power created the perfect environment for his return to prominence.

According to him, governance outcomes that fell short of public expectations caused many Ghanaians to rethink their political choices, ultimately restoring confidence in Mahama’s leadership.

He explained that in politics, relevance is often shaped not only by one’s own actions but also by the performance of opponents.

When citizens become disillusioned with those in power, they tend to revisit the track record of previous leaders, sometimes with a more favorable perspective.

In this case, Kpebu believes the NPP’s stewardship unintentionally strengthened Mahama’s appeal.

“The conditions gingered him,” Kpebu suggested, emphasizing that the challenges faced under NPP governance sharpened Mahama’s resolve and positioned him for a stronger political comeback.

Rather than fading from the national scene, Mahama used the moment to rebuild his image, reconnect with the grassroots, and reassert his influence.

Kpebu further noted that governance can have unintended consequences, particularly when public trust begins to erode.

Such moments, he argued, often breathe new life into political figures who may have previously lost momentum.

In Mahama’s case, the shifting political climate helped restore his credibility and broaden his acceptance among voters.

The lawyer’s comments have since sparked mixed reactions across the country. While some agree with his assessment, pointing to growing public concerns during the NPP era, others argue that Mahama’s resurgence should be credited to his own political strategy and engagement rather than the failures of his opponents.

Beyond the immediate debate, Kpebu’s remarks highlight a broader reality about democratic politics: power is constantly shaped by public perception, and leadership is judged in comparison to alternatives. Political fortunes, therefore, are rarely static and can change rapidly depending on the national mood.
