In a shocking crackdown, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has banned Koforidua Secondary Technical School, New Juaben Senior High School, and New Nsutem Senior Technical High School from all sports curricular activities for two years following incidents of hooliganism and alleged stabbing during a recent inter-schools competition.
GES described the actions of the students as “unacceptable and contrary to the values of discipline and fair play expected in Ghanaian schools.”
The decision comes after reports that violence erupted during the competition, culminating in one student allegedly stabbing another, raising serious concerns about student safety and school supervision.
The ban means the affected schools will be prohibited from participating in all inter-school sports competitions and related activities until further notice.
GES officials have urged school authorities to implement stricter measures to curb violent behavior among students, including counseling, disciplinary action, and enhanced supervision during school events.
Education stakeholders have expressed mixed reactions to the sanction. Some believe it is a necessary step to restore order and instill discipline, while others caution that collective punishment could affect innocent students who were not involved in the incidents.
GES has reiterated its commitment to ensuring a safe and disciplined learning environment, warning that any future breaches could result in even stricter penalties.
The move sends a clear message to all schools across the country: violence and hooliganism will not be tolerated in Ghana’s educational institutions.
