Kofi Asare, Executive Director of Africa Education Watch, has recounted a personal experience of alleged police brutality to underscore ongoing concerns about accountability within the Ghana Police Service.

In a Facebook post dated March 23, 2026, Asare detailed an incident that occurred in 2003 when he returned home late at night to his residence in Haatso.

According to his account, a police patrol stopped the taxi he was traveling in and, after a brief inspection, accused the driver of an offense.

Assuming the matter did not involve him, Asare said he paid his fare and proceeded toward his home.

He alleged that he was suddenly struck from behind by a police officer, causing him to fall into a nearby gutter. When he questioned the officer’s actions and attempted to defend himself, the situation escalated.

Asare claimed the officer repeatedly assaulted him, including hitting him with the butt of a rifle.

He further stated that despite attempts by another officer to intervene, the assault continued, with the officer allegedly following him into his home and inflicting further harm.

At the time, Asare noted he was serving as an aide to Freddie Blay, who was then First Deputy Speaker of Parliament.

He reported the incident the next day, presenting medical evidence and providing details such as the police vehicle number, which led to the officers being summoned.

However, Asare said the officers denied the allegations and instead accused him of attacking them. With no independent witnesses to corroborate his account, the case did not progress, leaving him disillusioned.

Reflecting on the experience, Asare said it has since influenced his interactions with police, leading him to avoid confrontation.

He linked his experience to a recent incident involving artist Ibrahim Mahama, suggesting a pattern in how such cases are addressed, while acknowledging that professional conduct exists alongside instances of misconduct.
