Former Presidential Press Secretary and New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential hopeful, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has urged President John Dramani Mahama to take firm action against individuals allegedly involved in financial mismanagement surrounding the National Cathedral project.

Speaking during a radio discussion on Asempa FM, Agyepong described it as “good news for Ghana” if the President allows a thorough investigation that leads to the arrest and prosecution of anyone found culpable in the controversial project.

The National Cathedral, which was originally presented as a unifying national symbol, has remained under heavy public scrutiny due to questions about funding, transparency, and accountability.

Over the years, concerns have grown over how public funds were handled, especially at a time when the country has faced economic hardship.

During the interview, Agyepong deliberately avoided mentioning specific names. However, he made it clear that those involved already know themselves.

He added that some of the people linked to the project are still active in politics and even seeking higher office.

“This issue should not be about witch-hunting. It should be about justice. Anyone who had a hand in wrongdoing knows it already,” Agyepong said.

He emphasized that the law must be applied equally to everyone, regardless of political party, social status, or influence.

According to him, selective justice weakens democracy and encourages corruption to spread deeper into public institutions.

Agyepong warned that if allegations surrounding the Cathedral project are ignored, it could worsen the growing mistrust between citizens and government leaders.

He noted that many Ghanaians are frustrated because they expect transparency, especially when public money is involved.

“The people are watching closely,” he said.

“When leaders fail to act on clear concerns, the public begins to lose confidence not only in politicians but in the entire system.”

The NPP stalwart outlined three major reasons why prosecuting any confirmed wrongdoing is critical.

First, it would strengthen the rule of law by showing that no one is above accountability.

Second, it would restore public confidence in state institutions that are meant to protect national resources.

Third, it would send a strong signal that Ghana’s leadership is serious about financial discipline and transparency.

Political analysts who followed the discussion believe Agyepong’s comments reflect a wider national mood.

Many Ghanaians, they say, are becoming less tolerant of corruption and more vocal about how public funds are managed.
