Accra, Ghana – Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has criticised the Electoral Commission (EC) for hastily scheduling a rerun of the Kpandai parliamentary election, arguing that the move disregards ongoing legal processes.

Speaking on December 11, 2025, Bawumia highlighted that NPP candidate Matthew Nyindam currently has pending appeals in both the High Court and the Supreme Court, which have yet to be resolved.

He described the EC’s decision as an “indecent haste” that undermines established democratic procedures.

“In similar electoral disputes in other constituencies, the EC has waited for all judicial matters to conclude before taking action. It is unclear why Kpandai is being treated differently,” Bawumia said.

He warned that bypassing legal processes could erode public confidence in Ghana’s electoral system and threaten the stability of democratic institutions.

Bawumia’s comments follow rising tensions over the EC’s handling of contested elections, with calls for transparency and adherence to judicial outcomes.

Observers note that the ruling party and its supporters have been vocal in ensuring that electoral procedures are followed to maintain credibility and public trust.

The Kpandai constituency rerun comes amid broader debates over electoral reforms and the EC’s mandate to balance timely elections with legal compliance. Stakeholders continue to monitor developments closely as the situation unfolds.
