Ghana assistant coach John Paintsil has played down concerns about the quality of opponents drawn against the Black Stars at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, urging fans to focus on performance rather than reputation.

The Black Stars were drawn into Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama, a combination that has triggered mixed reactions among supporters.

While some believe Ghana faces an uphill task, Paintsil is convinced the group will instead bring out the best in the team.

Speaking during a World Cup draw viewing event, the former Ghana defender dismissed fears surrounding the high-profile opponents and stressed the importance of mental strength and preparation.

“This is not a group that Ghanaians should underrate,” Paintsil said.

“Forget about the names. We are going to a tournament, and I believe this is a group that will bring the best out of the team.”

Ghana will begin their World Cup journey against Panama on Wednesday, June 17, with the match scheduled for 11:00 pm GMT in Toronto.

The Black Stars will then face England on Tuesday, June 23, at 8:00 pm GMT in Boston, before closing the group stage with a tough encounter against Croatia on Saturday, June 27, at 10:00 pm GMT in Philadelphia.

Paintsil believes that starting the tournament against Panama gives Ghana the opportunity to build confidence early before facing the European giants.

According to him, securing a positive result in the opening match could set the tone for the rest of the campaign.

He also pointed to Ghana’s impressive run during the qualification stage as evidence that the team is well-prepared for the challenge ahead.

The Black Stars put together a strong qualifying campaign, showing consistency, resilience, and discipline both at home and away.

“Looking at our performance during qualification, it was fantastic,” Paintsil explained.

“The team showed character, confidence, and togetherness. These are qualities you need at the World Cup.”

The assistant coach further highlighted the depth and quality of players currently available to the national team.

With a blend of experienced internationals and emerging young talents playing in top European and African leagues, Paintsil believes Ghana has a squad capable of competing at the highest level.

“We have many players who are equally very good,” he said.

“They are playing competitive football every week, and they are ready to stand up to any task.”

Paintsil also emphasized that football at the World Cup level is no longer about reputation alone.

He noted that modern football has become more competitive, with so-called smaller teams increasingly challenging traditional powerhouses.

“At this level, there are no easy games,” he added.

“You have to be focused, disciplined, and ready from the first minute. If you respect every opponent and play your game well, you always have a chance.”

The former Black Stars right-back, who represented Ghana at multiple international tournaments, believes that the current team has the hunger needed to make an impact on the world stage.

He says the players are aware of the expectations from fans back home and are determined to make the nation proud.

As preparations continue for the tournament, Paintsil called on Ghanaians to rally behind the team and offer their full support.

“The players need the backing of the entire country,” he said.

“With unity, belief, and hard work, this team can achieve something special.”
