According to a report by Ghanaweb on Saturday, December 6, 2025, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi‑Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, is reportedly facing serious financial difficulties, according to Paul Kwabena Yandoh, Communications Director of the NPP in the Ashanti Region.
Speaking to the media, Yandoh said,
“Chairman Wontumi is suffering financially. Whenever you try to send him money through MTN MoMo, it is reversed immediately with caution. Even when I tried sending him just GH₵500, MTN reversed it and warned me not to try again.”
According to Yandoh, all of Wontumi’s bank accounts, MoMo wallets, and cars have been frozen.
“He has no access to his money. His accounts, cars and businesses are blocked. The man who used to operate freely is now struggling to survive,” Yandoh added.
The communication director further explained that Wontumi is being monitored by law enforcement agencies.
“He reports every three days to EOCO, every two weeks to CID, and he also has matters in two High Courts. This is very stressful for him,” Yandoh said.
Beyond financial constraints, Wontumi’s media businesses have also been affected.
“Even his radio stations in Kumasi, Takoradi, and Accra have been shut down. He cannot even reach his supporters easily; WhatsApp calls are now the only way,” Yandoh revealed.
The alleged freeze and restrictions are reportedly linked to investigations into illegal mining and environmental offences.
EOCO is said to have impounded about 15 of Wontumi’s luxury vehicles, including a Bentley and a Rolls‑Royce.
Yandoh concluded, “This is a man who contributed so much to society and politics. Now, he is being treated as if he has no means to support himself. His plight is shocking.”
The situation has sparked public debate about due process, the legality of asset freezes, and whether political figures can be targeted financially during investigations.
