A recent broadcast on Wontumi FM has revealed fresh details about Akonta Mining, a company owned by the Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi.

The report disclosed that the company has planted more than 30,000 coconut trees around its mining concession.

The goal of this large-scale plantation is to protect the land from constant attacks by illegal miners while improving the environment and fostering economic growth.

According to the presenter, the project was designed as both a security and sustainability measure.

The thick coconut plantation forms a living fence that prevents illegal miners from gaining access to the concession while simultaneously rejuvenating the soil and supporting local ecosystems.

He said this reflects Chairman Wontumi’s vision of using natural, eco-friendly methods to preserve land resources and promote agricultural innovation.

The presenter remarked that Akonta Mining’s actions mark a major departure from the norm, as most mining companies leave behind damaged and unproductive lands after extraction.

By contrast, Chairman Wontumi’s company is choosing a path that focuses on long-term environmental and community benefits.

The planting of 30,000 coconut trees, he explained, is symbolic of a commitment to creating a greener legacy that will outlive the company’s mining operations.

He also disclosed plans by the company to build a coconut processing factory near the site.

The factory would process coconuts for both domestic use and export, generating employment and boosting the local economy.

The news has reportedly brought optimism to residents and workers in nearby communities, who view it as a step toward sustainable development and self-sufficiency beyond mining.

The broadcast described the initiative as a clear expression of Chairman Wontumi’s desire to contribute meaningfully to his region—not just as a businessman, but as a leader who values social and environmental responsibility.

The presenter concluded that Akonta Mining’s initiative is changing public perceptions about the mining industry, showing that resource extraction and environmental stewardship can coexist when guided by responsible leadership.
