A first-term Assembly Member in the Asante Akyem North Municipality of the Ashanti Region has been found dead in what authorities suspect may be a suicide.
The deceased, identified as Kwabena Osei, represented the Agogo Apentenyinase Electoral Area. He was reportedly discovered hanging from the ceiling of his residence on the night of Wednesday, January 7, 2026, at approximately 9:00 p.m., sending shockwaves through the local community and the Assembly.
According to information gathered, neighbours alerted local authorities after noticing unusual activity at the Assembly Member’s home. Police officers later confirmed the discovery and immediately began preliminary investigations.
Confirming the incident on Thursday, January 8, the Presiding Member for the Asante Akyem North Municipal Assembly, Frank Gyamfi, described the late Kwabena Osei as a young, energetic, and promising leader who had shown commitment to grassroots development.
Mr Gyamfi revealed that he had interacted with the deceased just days before the incident, making the news particularly devastating.
“I was informed by some colleagues that one of our Assembly Members had passed away. I was shocked because I personally spoke with him on Sunday about some personal matters,” he said.
While initial reports point to suicide, Mr Gyamfi cautioned against drawing premature conclusions, stressing that investigations are still ongoing.
“They are saying it is a suicide, but whether he committed the act himself or there was external involvement is something only the police can determine. I do not want to preempt the outcome of their investigations,” he stated.
He added that the body of the late Assembly Member has since been transported to the Agogo Mortuary for preservation and autopsy, pending further police inquiries.
Kwabena Osei, believed to be in his early 30s, was serving his first term as an Assembly Member and was regarded by many residents as an approachable and dedicated local representative.
His sudden death has sparked grief and concern among constituents, colleagues, and community leaders.
Residents of Agogo Apentenyinase described the incident as deeply troubling, noting that the Assembly Member had shown no public signs of distress in recent weeks.
