Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader in Parliament, has clarified his position regarding his earlier political commitment to ensure that “Ken” returned to Ghana, stating that circumstances have now changed.

Speaking in relation to issues raised after the recent State of the Nation Address (SONA), Afenyo-Markin explained that his initial promise was made based on the facts and information available to him at the time.

“I made a political commitment for Ken to come back based on the facts at the time,” he stated. According to him, the matter has since evolved into a legal one, effectively removing it from the realm of political negotiation or influence.

“The matter is now a legal one and as such, I no longer have control over it,” he added.

His remarks suggest a clear distinction between political assurances and legal processes, emphasizing that once an issue enters the jurisdiction of the courts or relevant legal institutions, it must be handled independently of political intervention.

This clarification appears aimed at addressing critics who may have questioned why the earlier commitment has not materialized as expected.

The Minority Leader’s comments also reflect the broader tension between politics and the rule of law in Ghana’s democratic system.

While political leaders often make commitments in response to public pressure or emerging controversies, the transition of such matters into legal proceedings can limit their direct involvement.

Observers note that Afenyo-Markin’s statement signals an attempt to respect due process while managing political expectations.

As the situation unfolds, attention will likely remain on how the legal process develops and whether any further political commentary will follow from the Minority caucus. For now, Afenyo-Markin maintains that the issue is firmly in the hands of the law, beyond his personal or political control.
