A new controversy has emerged in Ghana’s Parliament after Matthew Nyindam, the newly sworn-in Member of Parliament for Kpandai, alleged that Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor threatened him shortly after the current Parliament took office.

Speaking on The AM Show on JoyNews, Nyindam said the incident occurred just two days after the swearing-in ceremony.

He claimed that Dafeamekpor made a remark implying he would “get him out of Parliament.”

According to Nyindam, the comment was disturbing and appeared deliberate rather than casual or joking.

The Kpandai MP suggested that such statements reflect underlying tensions in the House, especially between MPs from opposing parties.

He warned that using authority to intimidate colleagues threatens mutual respect and the principles of democratic governance within Parliament.

“If such attitudes persist, they could undermine cooperation and constructive debate,” Nyindam noted.

Observers say the allegation is particularly significant given Dafeamekpor’s role as Majority Chief Whip—a position responsible for enforcing discipline, coordinating parliamentary business, and maintaining cohesion within the majority caucus.

Any suggestion that the office could be used to intimidate an elected MP raises concerns about the balance of power and tolerance for dissent in the legislature.

The claim comes amid heightened tensions in Parliament, with increasing instances of sharp exchanges, partisan disagreements, and publicized internal conflicts.

Analysts say the episode underscores broader anxieties about how disputes are managed and whether the parliamentary leadership is taking adequate steps to promote dialogue and restraint.

As of reporting, Dafeamekpor has not issued a public response to the allegation. The incident, however, has sparked widespread debate in political and media circles, with calls for clarity and accountability from both sides.

Many have urged caution until the facts are fully established, emphasizing the need to maintain decorum and prevent escalation.

Whether the alleged comment was made in the heat of the moment or represents a more serious threat remains unclear.

What is certain, though, is that the episode has renewed discussions about parliamentary ethics, leadership accountability, and the conduct expected of elected officials in Ghana’s legislature.
