Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has spoken publicly following the New Patriotic Party’s defeat to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2024 elections, as reported by 3news.
In remarks to NPP supporters, he expressed a hope that Ghanaians are not regretting their decision to return John Dramani Mahama to office, saying, “The people have spoken. They rejected Dr. Bawumia and chose Mahama again. I just hope they aren’t complaining already.”
Akufo-Addo reflected on the challenges his government faced but emphasized the progress made in critical areas like education, infrastructure, and digital transformation.
He noted that many failed to appreciate these successes: “Indeed, there were global crises such as the pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war, yet Ghana advanced with Free SHS, road projects, and digital initiatives—all achievements we can be proud of.”
He also defended Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as an able leader and the right choice to succeed him, but acknowledged that electoral outcomes are influenced by connection with the people.
“Bawumia is intelligent, humble, and competent, but politics isn’t only about ability; it’s about resonance with voters. They chose Mahama again. Let’s hope he rises to the challenge,” he said.
Akufo-Addo reminded Ghanaians that governance comes with hurdles and that Mahama will now confront the issues the NPP faced.
He urged party members to remain united and forward-looking: “We lost this round, but the struggle continues. The NPP will regroup with fresh energy, innovative ideas, and committed supporters.”
