U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has announced that American forces carried out what he described as “the most lethal, most complex, and most precise aerial operation in history,” amid reports that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, had been assassinated.

In a statement posted on his verified social media account, Hegseth said the mission—code-named Operation Epic Fury—was conducted overnight under the direct authorization of U.S. President Donald Trump.

According to him, the operation targeted Iran’s missile infrastructure, weapons production facilities, and naval assets, marking a dramatic escalation in already strained relations between Washington and Tehran.

Hegseth accused the Iranian government of decades of hostility toward the United States, stating that diplomatic opportunities had been presented but ultimately rejected.

“The Iranian regime had their chance, yet refused to make a deal and now they are suffering the consequences,” he wrote.

Reiterating the administration’s longstanding position, the Defense Secretary stressed that Iran must never be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon.

He pledged continued action to neutralize missile systems deemed capable of threatening American interests and indicated that Iran’s naval capabilities were also among the primary targets of the broader campaign.

“The United States did not start this conflict, but we will finish it,” Hegseth stated, warning that any entity responsible for harming or threatening Americans would face decisive consequences.

Iranian authorities have condemned the strikes as unlawful aggression and vowed retaliation. However, Tehran has not formally confirmed reports regarding Khamenei’s alleged death. Independent verification of the assassination claims remains unclear.

Military analysts suggest that the scale and coordination of the U.S. action indicate a significant widening of hostilities, with regional forces reportedly placed on heightened alert.

The developments have raised concerns about potential ripple effects across the Middle East and beyond, as global leaders call for restraint to prevent further escalation.
