A 9-year-old girl has been left with life-changing injuries after she was caught in the middle of a violent gang attack at a restaurant in Accra.

The shocking incident happened last year in Osu when gunmen stormed a popular eatery, allegedly targeting rival gang members.

In the process, bullets struck the young girl who had been enjoying a meal with her family.

According to prosecutors, the shooting was planned by a man identified as Kwaku Owusu, 34, who acted as the getaway driver for the gunman.

Owusu was accused of scouting the restaurant several times to confirm that the rivals were inside before assisting the attacker.

The gunman fired multiple shots into the restaurant, causing chaos and panic. Though the intended targets managed to escape, the little girl suffered a severe head injury.

She was rushed to Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital where doctors battled to save her life. She underwent several surgeries, including the replacement of part of her skull with a titanium plate.

While she survived, doctors confirmed that the child will live with permanent physical and cognitive difficulties.

Her mother, in a moving statement, described the family’s pain, saying: “Our daughter was once a joyful and active child.

Now, she struggles daily with weakness on one side of her body and emotional scars that may never heal.”

An Accra High Court sentenced Owusu to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 32 years.

The presiding judge, Justice Amankwah, said the crime was a deliberate attempt to kill rival gang members and showed reckless disregard for innocent lives.

He added: “The little girl and her family will carry the scars of this violence forever. This court must send a clear message that such brutality has no place in our society.”

Police say they are still hunting for the gunman, who escaped after the attack. Authorities are offering a cash reward for any information that leads to his arrest.

Meanwhile, residents of Osu and neighbouring communities have expressed concern about the rising influence of youth gangs and the dangers they pose to public safety.
