A brief but telling interaction between President John Dramani Mahama and Nigerian music star Asake has sparked widespread discussion on social media following a recent firearm-related incident that occurred at a public event in Accra.

The encounter took place on December 30, 2025, during a high-profile supercar exhibition attended by prominent personalities, including businessman Ibrahim Mahama, entrepreneur Richard Nii Armah Quaye, actor and politician John Dumelo, and other invited guests.

A short video from the event, which has since gone viral, captured the moment the President was introduced to the popular Afrobeats artiste.

Appearing momentarily surprised, President Mahama was heard asking, “Ooh, so he is the one the guy fired the gun for?”—a reference to a recent viral video showing a firearm being discharged during Asake’s appearance at the El-Wak Stadium on December 28, 2025.

When those present confirmed the incident, Asake laughed briefly before expressing regret over what had occurred.

“We are not happy about what happened,” the singer said, acknowledging the seriousness of the situation.

President Mahama responded calmly but firmly, smiling as he told the musician, “Don’t worry… the law is the law.”

The measured response has since been interpreted by many observers as a reminder that celebrity status does not place anyone above Ghana’s laws.

The President’s comment comes amid ongoing police investigations into the incident, which raised concerns about public safety and the growing trend of firearms being displayed or discharged at entertainment events.

The Ghana Police Service, through its Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Cyber Vetting Team, confirmed the arrest of a suspect linked to the viral footage.

In a statement issued on December 30, police announced that Abubakari Sadick, popularly known as “Cyborg,” was arrested on December 29 at Adenta, a suburb of Accra.

The suspect is alleged to have been the individual who discharged the firearm during the event.

“The suspect was arrested for possession and discharging of a firearm,” the police statement said.

Officers further disclosed that a Derya MK-12 firearm, bearing registration number 22-GHA-1162, had been retrieved and secured as evidence to aid ongoing investigations.

The firearm incident has triggered intense public debate, with many Ghanaians calling for stricter enforcement of laws regulating weapons at public gatherings.

Critics argue that the presence and use of firearms at entertainment events pose serious risks to public safety and undermine efforts to maintain law and order.

Others have praised President Mahama’s response, describing it as a balanced message that combined diplomacy with respect for the rule of law.

Social media users noted that the President neither trivialised the incident nor publicly rebuked the artiste, instead reinforcing the principle that legal processes must take their course.

Security analysts say the case highlights the need for tighter coordination between event organisers, private security, and law enforcement agencies.

They argue that celebrities and their entourages must be held to the same standards as ordinary citizens to deter future incidents.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has assured the public that investigations are ongoing and that anyone found culpable will be dealt with according to the law.

Authorities have also reiterated calls for the public to avoid glorifying or sharing content that promotes reckless behaviour involving firearms.
