Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez has held a high-level meeting with the club’s board of directors to discuss the future of head coach Xabi Alonso following the team’s disappointing 2–0 LaLiga defeat to Celta Vigo at the Santiago Bernabéu.

According to sources close to the club, the meeting focused on Madrid’s recent poor form and growing concerns about Alonso’s leadership, particularly ahead of a crucial UEFA Champions League clash against Manchester City scheduled for Wednesday.

The loss to Celta Vigo was viewed internally as a major setback.

It came just days after Madrid appeared to turn a corner with a convincing 3–0 win over Athletic Bilbao, raising hopes that the team was rediscovering stability.

Instead, Sunday’s defeat highlighted ongoing tactical and psychological problems within the squad.

That result has left Real Madrid four points behind league leaders Barcelona and increased pressure on Alonso, who has managed just one win in the club’s last five league matches.

While the club hierarchy is not believed to have made a final decision, sources say the upcoming Champions League tie against Manchester City could prove decisive in determining Alonso’s future.

Senior figures at the club are reportedly assessing replacement options should results continue to slide.

Former manager Zinedine Zidane is understood to be one of the names under consideration.

Zidane, who led Madrid to multiple trophies including three consecutive Champions League titles, has been without a coaching job since leaving the club.

Also being discussed is Álvaro Arbeloa, currently in charge of Real Madrid Castilla and seen as a long-term project within the club.

Beyond results, the board meeting also addressed concerns about squad management and dressing-room dynamics.

One major issue discussed was the stalled contract renewal of Vinícius Júnior, which remains unresolved and is believed to be causing uncertainty within the squad.

There is also worry about the recent form of key players such as Jude Bellingham and Federico Valverde, both of whom have struggled to reach their usual performance levels during the current slump.

Sources within the dressing room suggest that responsibility for the downturn is being shared between the players and coaching staff.

Some players reportedly feel they have not fully adapted to Alonso’s tactical ideas and training methods, leading to confusion on the pitch and inconsistent performances.

Questions have also been raised about Alonso’s man-management style, with concerns that he has been too lenient in recent weeks.

Some board members believe the team is lacking discipline and strong on-field leadership, particularly following the gradual fading of experienced figures such as Luka Modrić, Lucas Vázquez, and the absence of Dani Carvajal due to fitness issues.

The defeat to Celta Vigo further exposed Madrid’s struggles, as the team finished the match with just nine players after two red cards, compounding an already damaging night at the Bernabéu.

In addition to tactical and morale issues, injury problems continue to plague Alonso’s squad.

On Monday, the club confirmed that defender Éder Militão is expected to be sidelined for at least three months after suffering a rupture to the biceps femoris tendon in his left leg.

Militão was forced off during the first half of the Celta Vigo match and underwent medical tests the following day.

Club officials stated that his recovery would be closely monitored, with reports suggesting a rehabilitation period of three to four months.

The Brazilian international has endured a series of serious injuries in recent seasons, making this latest setback another major blow to an already stretched squad.

With results faltering, injuries mounting, and a decisive Champions League fixture approaching, pressure is rapidly building on Xabi Alonso.

The coming days may prove critical as Real Madrid weigh whether to stay the course or make a bold managerial change to salvage their season.
