Ghanaian Minister for Communication, Digital Technology & Innovations, Sam George, has lauded the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) and collaborating law enforcement agencies following the arrest of Frederick Kumi, popularly known as Abu Trica, for his role in an $8 million romance scam.

In a statement posted on social media on December 12, 2025, Sam George praised the CSA for what he described as a “surgical strike” against cybercrime, commending the agency’s leadership and the coordinated effort with other law enforcement bodies.

“Congratulations once again to the dedicated team at the Cyber Security Authority Ghana, led by their DG, Divine Selase Agbeti, and the Law Enforcement Unit for another surgical strike at the heart of cyber fraud,” the minister said.

He further acknowledged the collaborative work involving the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), and the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), stressing the broader message to criminals operating in cyberspace.

“The message is loud and clear: we will come after you so long as you engage in cyber-based crime either against Ghanaians or any other person. For God and Country,” Sam George declared, highlighting the government’s zero-tolerance stance against online fraud.

Abu Trica, 31, is accused of leading a sophisticated criminal network that targeted elderly victims primarily in the United States, reportedly operating since 2023.

According to court documents, the group exploited Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools to impersonate individuals, form fake romantic relationships, and extract money and valuables from unsuspecting victims.

The federal indictment charges Kumi with conspiracy to commit wire fraud, money laundering conspiracy, and a forfeiture specification. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in prison, reflecting the gravity of the offences.

CSA Acting Director-General Divine Selase Agbeti confirmed the arrest on December 11, 2025, framing it as a critical milestone in Ghana’s ongoing efforts to protect citizens from cybercriminals and safeguard the integrity of online transactions.

The DG emphasized that the operation aligns with the authority’s mandate to prevent, detect, and prosecute digital crimes targeting both local and international victims.

The case has captured public attention in Ghana, highlighting the rising sophistication of online scams and the use of emerging technologies such as AI to manipulate victims.

Experts have warned that such crimes can have devastating financial and emotional impacts, particularly on elderly and vulnerable populations.

Authorities have called on the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious online activity, while also urging internet users to exercise caution in online relationships and financial transactions.

Sam George’s commendation of the CSA underscores the government’s commitment to tackling cybercrime decisively, sending a strong deterrent message to would-be fraudsters.

Public confidence in Ghana’s cybersecurity infrastructure has been reinforced by this high-profile arrest, demonstrating that coordinated enforcement efforts can successfully disrupt international crime networks.
