Former Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul has argued that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) cannot afford to take risks by presenting an unfamiliar face as its presidential candidate ahead of the 2028 general elections, insisting that Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia remains the party’s safest and most strategic option.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express, Mr Nitiwul said time and political realities are against the idea of introducing a new candidate who would require extensive national rebranding and voter education.

“We simply do not have the luxury of time to market a completely new candidate,” he said.

“You cannot change billboards across the country and reorganise everything from scratch at this stage.”

According to the former minister, Ghana’s electoral history shows a clear preference for candidates who are already well known at the national level.

“As a general rule, Ghanaians have never voted for a first-time presidential candidate,” Mr Nitiwul stated.

“It would be risky for the NPP to present a first-timer as our flagbearer.”

He argued that such a gamble would be unnecessary when the party already has a candidate with significant national exposure, experience, and electoral credibility.

“When you have someone who has been tested before and can win you the election, there is no need to take avoidable risks,” he added.

Mr Nitiwul further warned that the stakes for the NPP in the 2028 elections are extremely high, stressing that a loss would have serious consequences for the party’s future.

“For the NPP, losing in 2028 would be disastrous,” he cautioned.

“That is why we must be strategic and make the right decision.”

He concluded that Dr Bawumia’s visibility, experience, and familiarity among voters place him in a stronger position than other aspirants contesting the party’s primaries.
