A social media post by Vincent Ekow Assafuah, Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, has ignited significant public debate after raising concerns about an alleged GHC 12 million cedis donation by the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) to the national football team, the Black Stars, at a time when cocoa farmers across the country are reportedly grappling with severe financial hardships.

The post by the Old Tafo legislator, which gained rapid traction online, questioned the propriety and timing of such a financial decision, drawing widespread reactions from Ghanaians who expressed varying degrees of concern, disbelief, and frustration.

Many citizens questioned whether it was appropriate for a regulatory body mandated to support cocoa farmers and the cocoa industry to channel such a substantial sum toward football, particularly given the current economic climate facing those in the agricultural sector.

Critics argued that the alleged donation reflects a troubling misalignment of priorities within Ghana's public institutions.

With cocoa farmers said to be struggling with inadequate support, rising production costs, and insufficient compensation, many online commentators felt that funds of this magnitude should have been directed toward improving the livelihoods of the very farmers who sustain Ghana's cocoa industry — a sector that remains one of the country's most vital economic pillars.

The debate also touched on broader issues of transparency, accountability, and governance in the management of state-owned institutions.

Calls for greater scrutiny of how public funds are allocated and spent were prominent among the reactions, with many citizens urging relevant authorities to provide a clear explanation and justification for the alleged expenditure.

As of the time of this report, neither COCOBOD nor government officials had issued an official statement addressing the claims.

The controversy, however, underscores growing public demand for responsible financial stewardship and a stronger commitment to prioritizing the welfare of Ghanaian farmers and citizens.
