Awudu: Some People Made Allegations That Dr Bawumia Owned Hubtel, But They Were Not Arrested

Awudu Mahama, Managing Editor of The Custodian, has questioned the apparent inconsistency in the handling of politically sensitive allegations, citing claims that were previously made against former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Speaking on GHOne News, he recalled accusations that Dr. Bawumia had an ownership stake in Hubtel and that portions of proceeds from electricity payment platforms were being diverted to him.

According to Mahama, despite the seriousness of those claims, there were no known arrests or prosecutions arising from the allegations.

He argued that the episode raises concerns about fairness and equal application of the law. In his view, when allegations are made in the public domain—especially those involving public funds or high-ranking officials—they should either be thoroughly investigated and resolved transparently or dismissed with clear evidence.

He suggested that selective responses to claims risk undermining public trust in state institutions.

Mahama emphasized that in a democratic society, accountability must not be seen as partisan or targeted.

If individuals are arrested or prosecuted over certain claims, then similar standards should apply across the board, regardless of political affiliation.

He questioned why some accusations quickly result in legal action while others appear to fade without consequence.

He further noted that the integrity of investigative bodies and law enforcement agencies depends on their perceived neutrality. When the public senses inconsistency, it fuels suspicion and deepens political divisions.

Mahama called for a system where allegations are handled strictly on the basis of evidence and due process, rather than political considerations.
