The education sector in Ghana is mourning the sudden death of Madam Abena Konadu, a respected deputy headmistress who collapsed and died at her home in Kumasi, Ashanti Region.

According to family sources, Madam Konadu was in good health and had spent the day preparing lessons for the new school term.

Shockingly, she collapsed without warning on the evening today and could not be revived despite efforts to save her.

Her passing has left colleagues, students, and friends devastated. Many have taken to social media to share their grief, posting heartfelt tributes and remembering her as a dedicated teacher, a mentor, and a mother figure to many.

A close colleague at the school where she worked described her as “an exceptional educator who always went the extra mile for her students.”

“Madam Abena believed that teaching was not just a job but a calling,” the colleague said.

“Her passion for education and her care for students were unmatched.”

Originally from Sunyani in the Bono Region, Madam Konadu had built a remarkable teaching career spanning more than 20 years.

She was serving as deputy headmistress at Asokwa Senior High School in Kumasi, where she was widely respected for her leadership and commitment to academic excellence.

Her dedication extended beyond the classroom. In 2023, she made headlines when she attempted to set a Ghanaian record for teaching mathematics continuously for 24 hours, inspiring both teachers and students across the country.

Beyond her professional life, Madam Konadu was a loving mother. She had recently celebrated her only son’s admission into university after his outstanding performance in the WASSCE examinations.

Tributes continue to pour in from former students who describe her as “a lovely soul” and “a teacher who believed in everyone’s potential.”

Education stakeholders in the Ashanti Region have described her passing as “a huge loss to the teaching fraternity” and have called on schools to honour her memory by continuing her mission to inspire excellence.

Madam Abena Konadu’s funeral arrangements are yet to be announced. Her legacy, however, lives on in the thousands of students she taught and mentored over the years.
