The Ministry of Interior has officially announced that Friday, 20th March and Monday, 23rd March 2026, have been declared public holidays for all Ghanaians.
The announcement, made on Friday, March 13, 2026, informs the general public that Friday, 20th March and Saturday, 21st March 2026, mark Eid-Ul-Fitr and Shaqq Days respectively. Both days are recognised as Statutory Public Holidays under Ghanaian law.
However, since the 21st of March 2026 falls on a Saturday, His Excellency the President of the Republic of Ghana has intervened by issuing an Executive Instrument (E.I).
This action was taken in accordance with Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act (Act 601), which grants the President the authority to designate substitute public holidays when a statutory holiday coincides with a weekend.
As a result of this Executive Instrument, Monday, 23rd March 2026, has been declared a public holiday. This ensures that workers and citizens do not lose out on the statutory rest day tied to the Eid-Ul-Fitr celebration.
The declaration applies to all workers and the general public across the country. Employers in both the public and private sectors are expected to comply with the directive accordingly.
The Ministry of Interior encourages all Ghanaians to take note of these dates as they plan their activities for the month of March. Citizens are also advised to visit the Ministry's official website at www.mint.gov.gh for the full details of the Executive Instrument and further information regarding the declaration.
The government wishes all Muslims in Ghana and across the world a blessed Eid-Ul-Fitr celebration.
