Only a portion of Ken Ofori Atta's account should have been freezed, not all the account - Edudzi

In a recent interview, legal expert Edudzi Tamakloe criticized the decision to block all funds in the bank accounts of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, calling it excessive and unwarranted.

He argued that the alleged amount involved, reportedly GH¢23,000, was minor and could have been frozen specifically, rather than subjecting the entire account to restrictions for an extended period.

Tamakloe noted that Ofori-Atta has lived in Ghana openly during the two terms of President Nana Akufo-Addo and has not been found guilty of any crime.

“It makes no sense to freeze everything for an entire year because of a relatively small deposit. Such measures appear disproportionate and punitive,” he stated.

He added that past actions under the Akufo-Addo administration raised similar questions regarding fairness and the use of state power in sensitive financial investigations.

He further highlighted the irony surrounding the Office of the Special Prosecutor, which was created to ensure impartiality and prevent politically motivated investigations. Now, the same office is conducting a probe into one of Akufo-Addo’s former appointees.

“The office intended to promote fairness is now being applied against a former presidential minister. That contradiction is striking,” Tamakloe said.

Finally, he stressed that if the Special Prosecutor is handling the case, due process must be allowed to run its course without interference, ensuring transparency and fairness.

The interview, broadcast and shared on TV3 Ghana’s Instagram page, has generated significant discussion among Ghanaians, sparking debates about accountability, proportionality, and the role of legal institutions in politically sensitive matters.
