Parliament has been thrown into heated debate after Kwame Asare Obeng formally petitioned for the dismissal of Abena Osei-Asare from her position as head of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), while also making strong accusations against former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta and officials at the Ministry of Finance.

In his petition addressed to the Speaker of Parliament, A-Plus argued that Osei-Asare’s former role as Deputy Minister of Finance under Ofori-Atta undermines her ability to independently supervise financial accountability processes.

He accused the finance administration during that period of engaging in excessive borrowing, weak fiscal discipline, and controversial contractual agreements that burdened the state.

He further alleged that she repeatedly supported officials under investigation, which in his view disqualifies her from leading a key oversight body.

The development has raised broader concerns about governance and parliamentary oversight, especially at a time when Ghana continues to face economic challenges linked to debt servicing, IMF-related reforms, and scrutiny of past financial decisions.

Observers say the credibility of the PAC is essential for maintaining public confidence in how state resources are managed.

A-Plus’s petition has therefore escalated political tensions, as it directly questions the integrity of individuals at the centre of financial oversight.

The issue now goes beyond personal accusations, highlighting a bigger national question: whether Parliament can effectively and impartially hold the executive and public institutions accountable.
