Residents of Accra were left in shock after a British national collapsed and died inside an ATM lobby shortly after withdrawing money.
The sudden incident happened on the evening, near a commercial bank in Osu.
The deceased, identified as 58-year-old Andrew Paul Hayward, was said to have been in Ghana visiting friends. On the night of the tragedy, he had reportedly gone to see a female friend who lived in the area before walking to the bank’s ATM.
According to eyewitnesses, Mr. Hayward entered the ATM booth and withdrew an undisclosed amount of money. Moments later, he suddenly fell to the ground. People nearby rushed to help, but he remained unresponsive.
One of his friends, who had invited him to the neighbourhood, was quickly alerted. He drove Mr. Hayward to a private hospital, but doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
Police officers from Osu District later arrived at the scene and launched an investigation. The body was transferred to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital morgue for preservation and postmortem examination.
A senior officer, who spoke to reporters, confirmed the incident.
“We received a report of a foreign national collapsing inside a banking hall’s ATM lobby. At this stage, there is no evidence of foul play, but we are waiting for the autopsy report,” he said.
Officials at the British High Commission in Accra have also been informed. They are working closely with Ghanaian authorities to establish the circumstances of his death and to contact his family in the United Kingdom.
Residents who witnessed the incident described it as shocking and heartbreaking. One eyewitness said, “It happened so fast. He looked fine when he entered the booth, but within minutes, he was lying on the floor. We were helpless.”
Police investigators have reviewed CCTV footage from the bank to piece together the man’s final movements before he collapsed.
