In Kumasi, security officers in the Ashanti Region have recorded a major win in the fight against organised crime after arresting six suspected gang members believed to be behind a string of violent robberies and house break-ins.
The suspects were arrested during two coordinated operations carried out in Obuasi and Ejisu following weeks of intelligence gathering by the Ghana Police Service.
According to police reports, the first raid took place at Obuasi Junction, where officers intercepted a vehicle suspected to have been used for criminal activities.
Police say the group appeared to have been conducting surveillance missions in the area.
The second operation took place later that night in Ejisu, where another suspect was arrested in a rented apartment believed to be the gang’s hideout.
Officers recovered an unlicensed AK-47 rifle loaded with eight rounds of ammunition, a tear gas canister, a walkie-talkie, and several housebreaking tools from the location.
The five suspects arrested in Obuasi were identified as Emmanuel Owusu, Daniel Kwarteng, Patrick Nyarko, Collins Asante, and Michael Boateng, while the one arrested in Ejisu was named as Richmond Appiah.
Police revealed that the operation followed weeks of undercover surveillance after a sharp increase in violent robberies and burglaries in several Ashanti Region communities.
Authorities believe the arrested suspects are part of a larger organised criminal network operating in Kumasi, Obuasi, and Konongo.
The six men are currently in police custody and are expected to be arraigned before court once investigations are concluded.
Speaking about the breakthrough, Ashanti Regional Police Commander ACP Isaac Danso praised the swift response by officers, saying the successful raids would help dismantle gangs that have been terrorising residents in the region.
Police have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movements or unknown individuals in their neighbourhoods. Investigations are ongoing, and more arrests are expected in the coming days.
