Residents of Kumasi and parts of the Ashanti Region are in shock following the discovery of a young woman’s body buried in a shallow grave in a nearby quarry.

The victim, identified as Adwoa Serwaa, a 21-year-old a student nurse from Atonsu, had been missing for over a month after leaving home to allegedly elope with her boyfriend.

According to her family, Adwoa disappeared on July 28, 2025, and her mobile phone was switched off shortly after she left home.

Concerned relatives reported her disappearance at the Atonsu Police Station, but initial searches yielded no results.

The case took a disturbing turn when, two days ago, Adwoa’s elder brother received a strange text message from her number requesting GHS 500.

Investigators believe the message was sent by her boyfriend, identified as Patrick Agyeman, who is now the main suspect in the case.

When the family ignored the request, a chilling follow-up text was sent, claiming that Adwoa had been killed and buried. The message also included specific directions to the location of the grave.

Police were immediately alerted and traced the site to an abandoned stone quarry in Abrepo.

Upon arrival, investigators discovered pieces of women’s clothing and noticed a strong foul smell coming from the area.

On Thursday morning, officers from the Ghana Police Service Homicide Unit, alongside public health officials, exhumed a decomposed body suspected to be Adwoa’s.

The remains have been transferred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital Mortuary, where a post-mortem examination will confirm the victim’s identity.

Speaking to reporters, Adwoa’s mother, Evelyn Amankwah, revealed that she knew her daughter was dating but had never met the man.

She said she had advised Adwoa to focus on her studies, but her daughter was determined to continue with the relationship.

Her father, Richard Serwaa, described her as “hard-working and ambitious” and urged the police to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.

The police have launched a manhunt for Patrick Agyeman, who is currently on the run.

Authorities are also appealing to the public to report any information that could lead to his arrest.
