Police in Tema, Greater Accra Region, have arrested two men accused of impersonating MTN Ghana agents in an attempt to defraud a businessman of thousands of cedis through Mobile Money (MoMo).

According to investigators, the suspects approached a popular electronics trader at Community 25 Market, claiming they were MTN officers registering businesses for special services, including Merchant IDs and Business Wallets.

The two suspects, identified as Kwaku Adjei and Yaw Boateng, reportedly presented themselves as authorised MTN representatives and attempted to convince the businessman to share his mobile money details for a supposed account upgrade.

However, their plan collapsed after they entered the wrong PIN during the “registration process,” raising suspicion. The businessman quickly alerted nearby traders, who called the police.

Officers from the Tema Regional Police Command responded swiftly and arrested the suspects on the spot.

At the time of their arrest, the men were found with MTN-branded T-shirts, fake identification badges, multiple mobile phones, registration forms, and other items believed to have been used to trick unsuspecting victims.

Police say preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects had been operating across Tema, Ashaiman, and Sakumono for several weeks, specifically targeting small business owners who depend on MoMo services.

The duo is currently being held at the Tema Community 2 Police Station pending their arraignment in court, where they are expected to face charges of fraud, impersonation, and attempted theft.

Authorities are urging anyone who may have fallen victim to the syndicate to report to the nearest police station and provide any supporting evidence to assist investigations.

The Ghana Police Service has also warned the public to remain vigilant when dealing with individuals claiming to be MTN officials and to always confirm the identity of anyone requesting access to personal financial details.

Residents have praised the swift arrest, saying the gang had caused anxiety among local traders for weeks.
