Dennis Miracles Aboagye, a leading figure within the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), has strongly criticized the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) over its response to illegal mining activities, widely known as galamsey.
His remarks highlight growing political tensions surrounding the environmental and public health consequences of the practice.
In a Facebook post dated Friday, April 25, Aboagye cautioned that the government’s perceived inaction could have severe long-term implications if not urgently addressed.
He stressed the importance of sustained public pressure, suggesting that without accountability, the situation could deteriorate significantly.
According to him, “If we don’t stop this government and prompt it to refocus on the things that matter, by dealing with their people they know are involved in GALAMSEY, we will wake up one day without a country.”
Aboagye’s comments were prompted by a circulating video showing polluted tap water in Oda, located in the Eastern Region. He described the footage as alarming evidence of the environmental damage caused by illegal mining.
Expressing frustration, he remarked, “This is how the taps in Oda are flowing but the NDC government continues to do on-looking.”
Beyond environmental concerns, he also raised issues about the treatment of individuals and groups who have publicly called for stronger government action.
He pointed to criticism directed at religious and medical professionals who have spoken out against galamsey.
In his words, “The Pentecost apostle spoke and they attacked, insulted and called him fake. The Pediatricians have spoken about how our newborns are deforming.”
Aboagye further accused the NDC administration of failing to deliver on its campaign promise to eliminate illegal mining. He argued that rather than curbing the activity, the situation has worsened under their leadership.
He stated, “This clueless, waste of time, of a government made a sacred promise to the people to end GALAMSEY.
They win power and they are the ones enabling the GALAMSEY which has escalated like never seen before in this country.”
