Police in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, have arrested four people suspected to be members of a notorious kidnapping ring that has been terrorising residents in recent weeks.
The suspects — identified as Kwaku Owusu, Afia Serwaa, Kojo Antwi, and Linda Osei — were captured during an intelligence-led operation in Tafo after a woman was allegedly kidnapped and forced to send GHS 48,500 through MTN Mobile Money to secure her release.
According to police sources, the victim was accosted while on her way home from work and bundled into a waiting vehicle.
The gang allegedly threatened her with harm and pressured her to transfer money from her bank account to their mobile wallets.
Once the transaction was completed, the woman was released unharmed but immediately reported the incident to the authorities.
Following tip-offs from residents, the Ashanti Regional Police Intelligence Unit tracked the suspects and intercepted them as they allegedly planned another operation.
During the raid, police recovered a Toyota Corolla believed to have been used in several kidnappings around Kumasi and neighbouring areas.
The vehicle has been impounded for forensic investigations.
Police officials say the arrests represent a significant breakthrough in the fight against rising cases of kidnapping in the region.
They also revealed that other accomplices are on the run and are being pursued.
Some residents of Tafo expressed relief after the arrests, saying the group’s activities had spread fear in the community.
“We were living in constant fear because people were disappearing, and we didn’t know who was behind it,” said a local shopkeeper.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command has urged the public to remain vigilant, avoid sharing personal financial details, and report any suspicious movements that could help track down other members of the gang.
The four suspects are currently being held at the Tafo District Police Station while investigations continue.
