Mahamudu Bawumia currently serves as the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), following the party’s internal processes after the 2024 general elections.

As the party begins to strategize toward the 2028 elections, growing attention is being directed at a crucial decision: the selection of a suitable running mate.

In Ghanaian politics, the choice of a vice-presidential candidate is highly significant. It often plays a decisive role in balancing regional representation, strengthening electoral appeal, and consolidating party support across diverse voter groups.

Within the NPP, several prominent figures have emerged as potential contenders for this position.

One leading figure is Matthew Opoku Prempeh, widely known as NAPO. Having served as Bawumia’s running mate in 2024, he remains a strong candidate for retention.

His experience as a former Minister for Education and Energy, combined with his influence in the Ashanti Region, enhances his political value.

Another notable name is Kennedy Agyapong, a former Member of Parliament for Assin Central. Known for his outspoken nature and strong grassroots appeal, he previously contested in the NPP flagbearer race.

While some believe he could energize the party’s ticket, his own leadership ambitions may influence his decision.

Yaw Osei Adutwum is also considered a viable option. As a former Minister of Education and MP for Bosomtwe, he combines policy experience with regional support, particularly in the Ashanti Region.

Among female contenders, Irene Naa Torshie Addo stands out for her leadership experience within the party and her strong advocacy for women’s inclusion.

Similarly, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, former Communications Minister and MP for Ablekuma West, is recognized for her assertive leadership and commitment to gender issues.

Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, MP for Ofoase-Ayirebi and former Information Minister, is admired for his communication skills and appeal to younger voters. Additionally, Patricia Appiagyei, Deputy Minority Leader and MP for Asokwa, has openly indicated her readiness to serve if selected.

Ultimately, the NPP’s choice of running mate will be a strategic decision with significant implications for the party’s performance in the 2028 elections.
