Tensions between political leadership and traditional authority have flared up after Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, a contender for the NPP presidency, responded strongly to statements attributed to Nana Boadi Amponim Abodade III.

During an appearance on Kessben TV, Agyepong criticized the chief’s comments as disrespectful and unsuitable for a traditional ruler. He made his position clear, remarking, “If he refuses to respect himself, we also respect ourselves.”

The incident has generated widespread discussion across the country, with many weighing in on issues of respect, leadership conduct, and the interaction between chiefs and politicians.

Agyepong also pointed to his royal upbringing, saying it shaped his sense of discipline and self-worth, making any attempt to label him or his followers as “sankwas” unacceptable.

The confrontation has since broadened into a national conversation about the extent to which traditional leaders should engage in political commentary and how politicians should respond to such criticism.

As both sides remain firm in their positions, the matter continues to attract public attention, deepening debate on authority, cultural respect, and the proper boundaries between traditional institutions and political office in Ghana.
