Afia Pokua has raised alarm over what she sees as growing political hostility that leads to disrespect against prominent figures in Ghana.
Writing on her verified Facebook page, she reacted to the controversy involving the Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, Apostle Eric Nyamekye, who was criticized by the Chief Executive Officer of the Free Zones Authority, Mary Ewusi, following his comments on illegal mining activities.
The church leader had called on authorities to strengthen the fight against galamsey, pointing out its severe environmental impact, especially the pollution of rivers, which has forced the church to stop conducting baptisms in river bodies.
Mary Ewusi, however, viewed his statement as politically motivated and reacted harshly, later issuing an apology to him.
Despite the apology, Afia Pokua believes it lacks sincerity, describing it as conditional. She further emphasized that it is unacceptable to publicly attack a respected spiritual leader with such a large following, insisting that the nature of the apology does not erase the wrongdoing.
