A state of alert has been declared in the Krāslava region in eastern Latvia after authorities there issued a warning of a possible threat in the country's airspace.

According to the Latvian National Defence Services (NBS), the alert was issued to residents of the area via a mobile emergency messaging system. Krāslava is located near Latvia's eastern border, in a region of high security importance due to its proximity to Belarus.

Following the incident, fighter jets participating in the NATO Baltic Air Policing program were activated and began taking air defense measures.

The NATO program involves fighter jets that are always ready to respond quickly to the detection of unidentified aircraft, unusual air activity or violations that could threaten the security of member states' airspace.

NATO operates the program by supporting Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, which do not have the full capabilities of fighter jets to protect their airspace independently.

However, to date, Latvian authorities have not provided detailed information about the nature of the threat that prompted the action. There has been no official confirmation that the incident is related to a military attack or that Latvian airspace has been invaded by an aircraft of another country.

The information provided only indicates that there was a possibility of an air threat and that precautionary measures were taken while the investigation is ongoing. Therefore, further details about the source and nature of the threat depend on official statements to be made by Latvian authorities.

For citizens in the affected area, authorities issued a warning message via the emergency communication system.

In such incidents, Latvian authorities have been emphasizing the importance of citizens following official instructions rather than spreading unverified information.

The move comes as Latvia continues to strengthen air surveillance along its eastern border, while Latvian forces and NATO allies continue to cooperate in air defense and surveillance.

The incident also raises concerns about air security in the Baltic region, which has been closely monitored due to various incidents of drones and air activity near NATO borders.

NATO says Baltic Air Policing is a permanent mission to protect the airspace of its allies and to enable a rapid response when unusual air activity is detected.

At present, however, no official statement has been issued confirming that the incident in Krāslava was an attack, and authorities have not yet clarified what prompted the alert.
