Former Information Minister and leading member of the New Patriotic Party, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has pledged unwavering support to Ghana’s cocoa farmers, declaring that the party will continue to fight for better returns and fair treatment for the sector.
Speaking during a meeting with cocoa farmers shortly after the governing National Democratic Congress engaged similar stakeholders, Oppong Nkrumah assured farmers that their concerns remain a top priority for the NPP.
“Even if it takes years, we will fight for what is due you,” he told a gathering of farmers, emphasizing that cocoa producers deserve improved pricing, timely payments, and stronger policy protections.
His comments come amid heightened political debate over cocoa pricing and farmer welfare. In recent months, farmers have raised concerns about rising production costs, delayed inputs, and the impact of global market fluctuations on their incomes.
Both major political parties appear eager to position themselves as champions of the cocoa sector ahead of future electoral contests.
Oppong Nkrumah highlighted the NPP’s track record in supporting cocoa farmers through interventions aimed at boosting production and stabilizing incomes.
He stressed that the party remains committed to advocating policies that reflect the true value of farmers’ hard work. The meeting also provided farmers with an opportunity to voice their frustrations and expectations directly.
Many expressed hope that bipartisan efforts would ultimately translate into tangible improvements on the ground rather than political rhetoric.
As competition for the loyalty of cocoa-growing communities intensifies, the spotlight remains firmly on which party can deliver lasting reforms for one of Ghana’s most critical economic sectors.
