Former Police Commissioner Bright Oduro has voiced serious concerns about the promotion processes carried out during the leadership of outgoing Inspector-General of Police Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.

During an interview on Channel One TV’s Big Issues, Oduro questioned the integrity of recent promotions within the Ghana Police Service, particularly cases where younger or junior officers were elevated ahead of their senior counterparts.

He referenced his own experiences in the force, recalling his role in apprehending high-profile criminals such as Johnson Kombian and armed robber Charles “Ata Ayi.” Despite these achievements, he explained that he never received a promotion as a result.

Oduro said he had always performed his duties without expecting rewards, noting that such dedication without anticipation of recognition was traditionally part of the police culture.

While he admitted that exceptional performance can sometimes justify fast-tracked promotions, he warned that mismanaging this system could undermine the established hierarchy in the service.

He pointed out that long-serving officers often become discouraged when they are overtaken by colleagues who have spent less time in the force.

The retired officer also criticized what he described as the unusually fast pace of promotions during Dr. Dampare’s tenure, arguing that it contributed to declining morale among veteran personnel.

In addition, he questioned certain transfer decisions, saying they appeared to ignore established protocols and created divisions within the institution.

With Dr. Dampare preparing to step down, Oduro’s remarks have revived debate about leadership practices, discipline, and motivation within the Ghana Police Service.

According to security analysts, the concerns he raised highlight broader institutional challenges that the incoming IGP will need to address to strengthen unity and restore confidence in the force.
