Drivers transporting passengers between Kumasi and the Bono Region have raised alarm over safety concerns after some were reportedly attacked in Abesim for displaying Asanteman flags in their vehicles.

According to the drivers, the incident happened during routine journeys along the Kumasi–Bono corridor when a group of local residents allegedly confronted them about the flags.

What began as verbal disagreements quickly escalated to threats and physical intimidation, prompting the drivers to flee for safety.

One affected driver told KessbenOnline that the experience was terrifying. He explained that they were warned explicitly that Asanteman flags would not be allowed in commercial vehicles operating within the Bono Region.

The drivers insist that they had not provoked anyone and were simply carrying out their transport duties.

The drivers stressed that the attack was particularly upsetting because the Asanteman flag represents cultural identity and unity, not a political statement.

They described the incident as unfair and unnecessary, given the historical relationship and cooperation between Kumasi drivers and communities in the Bono Region.

Some noted that this is not an isolated occurrence. Similar disputes in the past reportedly led to bans on vehicles from certain areas at key stations in Kumasi, such as Race Course and Adum, affecting livelihoods and worsening tensions among operators.

After the latest confrontation, drivers said they feel apprehensive whenever they travel through parts of the Bono Region, fearing further incidents that could disrupt transport operations and peaceful coexistence.

They are calling on regional authorities, traditional councils, and security agencies to intervene quickly to prevent additional attacks and guarantee that commercial drivers can perform their work without fear.
