The suspect, identified as Omesei Mondain, was tracked down after weeks of surveillance and intelligence from residents.
According to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Osei had been terrorising residents of Madina and nearby communities with violent robberies.
“The suspect has been a source of fear in Madina. Thanks to timely information from the public, we managed to arrest him and recover a weapon believed to have been used in his operations,” the police said in a statement.
Police reports indicate that the 28-year-old suspect was picked up during a dawn raid carried out by the Madina Divisional Police Command.
Acting on a tip-off, officers surrounded his house before searching the premises, where they discovered the pistol hidden under a mattress.
The firearm has since been sent to the Police Forensic Laboratory for ballistic analysis to establish whether it was used in other crimes reported in Accra.
Osei is currently in custody and will be arraigned before court in the coming days. Police say investigations are ongoing to determine whether he worked with accomplices who are still at large.
Residents of Madina, who had been living in fear due to the robberies, have expressed relief at the news. Some victims had complained of losing cash, mobile phones, and electronics during late-night attacks.
The Ghana Police Service has urged the public to remain vigilant and continue sharing information to help fight crime.
“Community cooperation is very important. This arrest is proof that when residents work with us, we can make Madina and other parts of Accra safer,” a police spokesperson said.
