The case has raised serious questions about how he entered the secure premises and what might have led to his death.
According to local reports, the incident happened late in the evening when officers at the Kumawu Police Station noticed a man lying motionless in the control room.
Witnesses say the man was found kneeling as though in prayer, but he was already unresponsive by the time officers reached him. Efforts to revive him proved unsuccessful, and he was later confirmed dead at a nearby hospital.
Authorities suspect the man might have inhaled a toxic substance. Early investigations suggest traces of a chemical spray, normally used for cleaning computer equipment, were detected near the scene.
A cleaner reportedly told officers she had heard unusual gasping sounds from inside the room moments before the man was discovered.
The location of the incident has made the case even more puzzling. The police station also shares the compound with offices of the District Commander, the Bureau of National Investigations, and a local court, making it one of the most closely guarded government facilities in the area.
“How he managed to walk inside unnoticed and end up dead in the control room is still a mystery,” said one senior officer who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Community members say they had spotted the man earlier that day around a popular betting centre in the town, but police have not yet confirmed if this is linked to the tragedy.
Speaking to reporters, Ashanti Regional Police PRO, ASP Richard Owusu, said investigations are ongoing. He explained that detectives are exploring two possibilities: whether the man took his own life or whether foul play was involved.
Local opinion leaders have described the matter as both troubling and unusual. One youth leader, Kojo Amankwah, said, “It is very strange for a man to enter such a secured place, unnoticed, and die in this way. We demand full transparency from the authorities.”
Police have since appealed to the public to help identify the deceased and provide any information about his background that could shed light on the case.
