The Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has raised new suspicions about the August 6 helicopter crash in Adansi Akrofuom, describing it as more than an accident.

Speaking on a local radio programme, he alleged that the crash, which killed eight high-ranking government and security officials, was part of a failed attempt to overthrow President John Dramani Mahama.

Among those who died were Defence Minister Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna, and Deputy NADMO Director-General Samuel Aboagye.

Their sudden deaths shocked the nation and deepened concerns about the safety of government officials.

Mr. Koomson argued that the professionalism of the pilots involved made it hard to accept that the incident was a routine aviation mishap.

“It was a coup that failed,” he declared, suggesting that the loss of such senior figures pointed to deliberate sabotage rather than bad weather or mechanical error.

He urged President Mahama to strengthen his personal security and take measures to protect his administration from what he called “evil schemes.”

Drawing comparisons with Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Koomson said strong steps were sometimes necessary to secure political stability when governments come under threat.

“The death of a Defence Minister cannot be brushed aside as coincidence,” he stressed.

“If people at that level are being targeted, then the President himself must be cautious.”

Koomson further accused members of the opposition of trying to destabilise the Mahama administration, though he provided no evidence to support his claim.

His remarks have divided public opinion, with some listeners dismissing the allegation as political speculation, while others agreed that the crash demands deeper scrutiny.

The tragedy has already prompted calls for an independent inquiry, with many insisting that only a transparent investigation will address lingering doubts.

Civil society groups, families of the victims, and opposition parties have all joined in urging government to release a full report.

President Mahama has described the crash as a “national tragedy” and assured the public that the truth will be uncovered.
