A group of newly posted teachers in Ghana have spoken out about the severe challenges they face due to unpaid salaries.
Many of them say they have worked for over a year without receiving any income, leaving them drowning in debt and struggling to survive.
The spokesperson for the Concerned Newly Posted Staff of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Simon Kofi Nartey, expressed the frustrations of his colleagues during a press briefing.
According to him, the situation has become unbearable as many of the teachers now depend entirely on credit from friends, relatives, and shop owners.
Teachers in deep financial trouble
Nartey revealed that several of the affected teachers cannot afford basic necessities such as food, mattresses, and transportation.
He noted that some have even been threatened by creditors for failing to pay back money borrowed for survival.
“How can we return to the classroom and give our best when we have no place to sleep and cannot feed ourselves? We are in debt, and our creditors are chasing us daily. The government needs to take action,” he said.
The teachers explained that their conditions are worsening by the day and accused authorities of neglecting their welfare.
They questioned how the state expects them to remain committed to quality education while leaving them unpaid for so long.
They plan to demonstrate in Accra to demand immediate payment of their salaries. According to Nartey, the protest is a last resort after months of waiting in vain for government intervention.
Despite their struggles, the teachers maintained that they remain committed to their profession.
However, they stressed that their patience is running out and urged the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service to act swiftly before matters escalate.
