A growing controversy has emerged in Ghana following remarks by Mary Awusi, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Free Zones Authority and a senior member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who cautioned Eric Nyamekye over his comments on illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

Speaking in a radio interview on Accra FM on April 23, 2026, Dr Awusi criticised the Apostle’s recent remarks, describing them as politically charged rather than objective.

She stated that while she would overlook the comments out of respect for his religious role, any future statements of a similar nature would be treated differently.

Her reaction followed statements made by Apostle Nyamekye during the 48th General Conference of the Church of Pentecost on April 22, where he raised concerns about the environmental impact of illegal mining.

He noted that pollution of rivers has affected church activities in some areas, forcing congregations to resort to alternative arrangements such as artificial pools for baptism.

Dr Awusi questioned the timing and consistency of such concerns, referencing conditions under the previous administration of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

She argued that water bodies were heavily polluted during that period and suggested that similar criticism was not as vocal at the time.

According to her, measures implemented under the current administration led by John Dramani Mahama have contributed to improvements in the condition of rivers, and these efforts should be acknowledged in public discourse.

The comments have triggered strong reactions among sections of the public, with some expressing concern over the tone of the warning directed at a religious leader.

Others, however, view the exchange as part of broader national debate on illegal mining, environmental protection, and the role of influential figures in shaping public opinion.

The development highlights ongoing tensions surrounding galamsey, a longstanding issue in Ghana that continues to generate debate across political, social, and religious spheres.
