Ghana’s Parliament was thrown into an unusual scene when lawmakers reportedly hooted and heckled Electoral Commission Chairperson Jean Mensa during a tense session.

The incident occurred as Mensa appeared before Parliament to respond to questions concerning the Electoral Commission’s preparations for District Assembly elections and other electoral responsibilities.

Her appearance came against the backdrop of continuing concerns about voter registration and the credibility of electoral processes.

Bawku Central MP Mahama Ayariga reportedly challenged the Commission to provide greater transparency in its operations.

He raised concerns about the voters’ register, the procurement of election materials and other issues relating to the management of elections.

His comments appeared to heighten tensions in the chamber as lawmakers demanded clearer explanations from the Electoral Commission.

As Mensa attempted to address the concerns, the atmosphere reportedly became increasingly disorderly, with some MPs expressing their dissatisfaction through loud hooting and heckling.

The incident has generated mixed reactions among Ghanaians. Supporters of Ayariga have praised him for demanding accountability from the electoral body, while others believe the conduct of lawmakers was inappropriate and undermined the dignity of Parliament.

The episode also reflects the broader political tensions surrounding Ghana’s electoral system, particularly as political parties and stakeholders continue to debate the credibility, transparency and independence of the Electoral Commission.

Political observers say the confrontation could influence future engagements between Parliament and independent constitutional institutions.

With public confidence in electoral processes remaining an important national issue, calls for transparency and constructive dialogue are likely to remain central to discussions about Ghana’s democratic future.
