Kwame Jantuah Esq., a member of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) and a member of the Governing Board for the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), has said anyone who carried out a coup acted illegally, emphasising that such action is a breach of the laws of the country.
He made the remark while speaking on Accra-based GHone TV. According to him, all the leaders in the history of the country, including Former President John Jerry Rawlings, who came to power through a coup, have breached the Constitution of Ghana, regardless of the decision that triggered the coup.
Mr Jantuah maintains that there is no justifiable reason for anyone to overthrow a democratically elected government, stressing that coups have never helped the country in any way.
Emphasising his stance against coups, the CPP bigwig highlighted that some of the challenges the country is facing now can be traced to the 1966 coup which saw Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, the First President of Ghana, overthrown.
"Anyone who carried out a coup in this country, including John Jerry Rawlings, acted illegally," he stated.
Mr Jantuah's assertion adds to the ongoing debate about the impact of coups on the development of the country, and whether coup leaders were able to cure the systemic reasons why they overthrew governments.
The argument re-emerged following the decision to rename the Kotoka International Airport to its original name, the Accra International Airport.
Members of the NDC government have asserted that General Kotoka, a coup maker, does not deserve to be named after an important national monument like the premier airport of the country.
